On 1 November 1871 Teatro Comunale di Bologna was Wagner’s gateway into Italy. After long negotiations and exhausting preparations, encouraged by the mayor of the day, Camillo Casarini, Angelo Mariani conducted Lohengrin, the first Wagner opera to be seen and heard in this country. It was a historic event, which brought Bologna back to the centre of musical debate and later gave the city the sceptre of four more Italian premières, from Tannhäuser to The Flying Dutchman, from Tristan und Isolde to Parsifal.
