Information

Based on the play La dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils.
To live and die in waltz time. That is what Violetta Valéry does, the Verdian heroine the censors wanted dressed in the costumes of Richelieu’s day, but who claims by force, note by note and word by word, her eternal contemporaneity. Perhaps precisely because she is a real person and not a historical character: a woman who died very young, just six years before the première of La traviata (1853). Alphonsine Plessis, under the stage name Marie Duplessis, became one of the most admired and refined of Parisian courtesans and passed into legend, thanks in part to Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel La dame aux camélias, which renamed her Marguerite. The heroine is a prostitute, a woman of the world, a woman known to the society columns of her day.
