Information

«The error of a moment», «Bohème, a failed opera, will not travel»: the misjudgements of the critics at the première (1896) are worth a thought too. La bohème travelled a great deal and travels still, but it is also true that it is not an opera like the others and, looked at beyond fond habit, it can still astonish. Drawn from a novel by Henri Murger (1851), it is where Puccini poured his own experience as a student and young artist, and it is the opera in which all of us can see ourselves. Four young men share a flat, the struggle and the cunning needed to get by, dreams, jokes and ambitions. Two of them have love affairs, but one of the two young women dies. One could say «that is all», were it not that this «all» is the experience each of us has in living and growing up: Mimì’s death has nothing heroic about it; it is, simply and painfully, part of life. Puccini’s music and the verses of Illica and Giacosa tell it with the sensitivity of a thousand details woven into the voices, the gestures, the orchestra.
