Information

A solemn flop at its première, then endless success. Or so a flowering of anecdotes about mishaps and plots would have us believe — anecdotes for which there is in fact no reliable historical evidence. There were some skirmishes between rival impresarios in Rome in 1816 around the first Rossini productions, but nothing too serious. The comedy was born so perfect that it was destined for triumph, and for a popularity that has sometimes ended up treating it rather roughly. Then again, it is the cunning Rossini who deceives us first: the plot is one of the oldest in the world — a greedy old man holds a young woman in his power, and she is saved by the love of a man her own age and by a shrewd helper — and we are invited to think that, with their skilful self-introductions, Figaro and Rosina are the engines of the action. In truth it is Count Almaviva who pulls the strings with his gold and his position, though almost always in disguise. Image, advertising, money and power: could one imagine a more modern opera?
