Information

The Ring of the Nibelung, first day. Wotan, king and father of the gods, places his hopes in a new chosen race to be born of his human descendants, from the union of the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde, separated in childhood. But Sieglinde is now Hunding’s wife, and he has the right to claim his honour. The laws of society prove stronger than the will of a god, than the passion of the young, than the ardour of the Valkyrie Brünnhilde. Nature must yield to what Fricka, Wotan’s wife and guardian of the family, implacably lays down. After the burst of life in which the twins recognise and love each other, proclaiming in incest their freedom from every bond, Wotan must accept that Hunding kills Siegmund, and must punish Brünnhilde for a rebellion he shares in his heart. The magic fire that rises as a barrier around the sleeping Valkyrie is a father’s moving farewell to the favourite among the daughters he had by Erda, the Earth. It is, already, the end of a world.
