The Ring of the Nibelung, prologue. Every saga has its backstory. So the great rewriting of Nordic epic that was to found a new way of understanding music theatre — Richard Wagner’s most ambitious project — begins with events that will shape the future, laid out over three days, through to the Twilight of the Gods and the failure of a planned new generation of heroes. Everything is already there in embryo, in an irreconcilable conflict between love — the vital, natural instinct — and the ambition for power and wealth. Rejected by the Rhinemaidens, the dwarf Alberich curses the first and devotes himself to the second, while the building of the gods’ fortress by the giants costs either Freia’s springtime youth or the gold and the ring forged from it, all-powerful and accursed. There is no escape: the end is set in motion by the craving to possess, and already in the first, impalpable notes the close of the cycle can be glimpsed: one day the gold will return to the Rhine, which will swallow the ambitions of men and gods once again.
45 minutes before curtain-up, the performance is preceded by an introductory talk on the opera by Alberto Mattioli, journalist, writer and music critic. The talk takes place on the lower floor of the Auditorium Manzoni.
