The last fruit of the collaboration between Mozart and Da Ponte no longer sets classes, sexes and generations against each other as in Le nozze di Figaro, nor a single rebel against the whole of society as in Don Giovanni. Così fan tutte (1790) concentrates on self-discovery: on the unconscious, illusion, morality, reason and nature. The disguises and the swapped couples orchestrated by the philosopher Don Alfonso lay bare the souls, desires and feelings of Dorabella, Fiordiligi, Guglielmo and Ferrando. Unmasking female infidelity seems no more than a pretext, all the more so because the plot has an accomplice in the maid Despina, the shrewd voice of nature who defends a woman’s right to pleasure. Yet when the status quo is restored, with the claim that it is good to be guided by reason and to laugh at «what usually makes others weep», nothing can be as it was. The comedy has an ending as ambiguous as its unfolding: the philosopher’s cynicism triumphs, but at a high price, and eros is bound up with pathos.
