First a protagonist of the New York neo-avant-garde of the 1960s within the Judson Dance Theater collective, and then the undisputed mother of minimalism, the choreographer Lucinda Childs has a special relationship with the composer Philip Glass, to whose music she created in 1979 the iconic Dance, a true milestone in the history of dance of the later twentieth century. It is she who curates Philip Glass–Études, born in 2024 as a co-production of Teatro Comunale di Bologna, which now welcomes it back rethought in a new version for the stage of the Nouveau. Over 12 Études by Glass, chosen by the music curator Oscar Pizzo and played on the piano by Simone Sgarbanti, a kaleidoscope of experimental creations unfolds in a plurality of artistic languages. Performed by the Roman company MP3 DanceProject directed by Michele Pogliani, the choreographies are signed by Childs and Pogliani themselves, but also by gifted authors from three different continents: the Brazilian Cassi Abranches, the Japanese Shintaro Hirahara and the queer non-binary South African artist Llewellyn Mnguni. To these are added video works by Shirin Neshat, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Fabio Cherstich and the Veneto collective Anagoor. A synaesthetic show, then, in which to savour minimalism in the broad sense, watching without interruption a range of approaches and visions springing from Philip Glass’s evocative scores.
