A Swan Lake catapulted into our own time, where conflicted relations between tyrannical parents and their children appear, set in a world afflicted by environmental crisis. In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the French-Albanian master Angelin Preljocaj, among the leading choreographers on the European scene, rewrote this masterpiece of classical ballet, born in 1895 in imperial Russia at the hands of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. His original, innovative contemporary version takes in Tchaikovsky’s musical world across a broad spectrum, ranging from the score of the ballet itself to other extracts from the same composer’s symphonies, overtures and concertos. The classical melodies, though, are set here in dialogue with the distinctly magnetic sonorities of 79D. The tormented, poignant love story of Siegfried and Odette is performed by twenty-six dancers of Ballet Preljocaj, the prestigious French company based in Aix-en-Provence, which this very year celebrates the fortieth anniversary of its founding in 1985 by the choreographer himself, its expert helmsman. A grand spectacle, then, which ferries the narrative of the ballet into the third millennium, enhanced by the lighting of Éric Soyer, the video projections of Boris Labbé and the costumes of the well-known Russian designer Igor Chapurin, who has worked on several productions at the Bolshoi in Moscow and has long collaborated with Angelin Preljocaj.
