Composed in the summer of 1921 and considered by Respighi himself one of his finest works, the Concerto draws on Gregorian themes, real, plausible or simply imagined. It is the brightest testimony of the Bolognese composer’s interest in early music, of which he was a tireless student — not in a nostalgic spirit, but with the sincere conviction that the past could live on in the forms of the present.
Quoted by Woody Allen in Manhattan as «one of the things that make life worth living», the Symphony no. 41, the last Mozart composed, is a triumph of form and content: never before in an eighteenth-century orchestral work had anyone gone so far in expanding the symphonic fabric, combining a solar, Olympian majesty — hence the name «Jupiter», attached by the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon — with a contrapuntal subtlety capable of the highest expressive value.
