In 1844 Hector Berlioz, one of the great fathers of French Romanticism and one of the greatest innovators in the symphonic field, wrote a concert piece in A major with a substantial solo part for the cor anglais. So was born the overture Le Carnaval romain, a brilliant piece of generous melodic breadth, rich in themes drawn from the opera Benvenuto Cellini, composed six years earlier. The themes used are those of the Roman carnival scenes from which the overture takes its title.
«Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune»A composer and cellist, the Ukrainian Eduard Resatsch composed the five symphonic songs for soprano and orchestra «Up in Flames» on five short texts by the poet Lina Kostenko (1930), a literary figure revered in Ukraine. The first four are meditations on the fire and ice of love; the fifth is a cry of anguish provoked by the «alien predatory hordes», a dramatic image of Ukraine’s fate.
«Die Toteninsel», op. 29«The first time, in Dresden, I saw only a copy of Böcklin’s remarkable painting ‘The Isle of the Dead’. The massive composition and the mystical subject of this picture made a great impression on me, and it determined the atmosphere of the poem». So said Sergei Rachmaninov of one of the great symbolist masterpieces of painting, from which in 1909 he drew a symphonic poem of enormous descriptive power, with the imposing cliffs of the island, the cypresses standing erect towards the sky, the entrance through which one passes never to come out again, and the dark waters over which the boat of the dead sails, with the gloomy, regular strokes of the oars cutting a seemingly motionless surface.
Daphnis et Chloé, Suite no. 2Pirates have carried Chloe off. Daphnis blames the nymphs and, exhausted, falls asleep in their grotto. But they take pity on him and call Pan to the rescue; with a prodigious apparition he saves Chloe from the pirates’ hands and brings her back to her shepherds. Here begins the third tableau of the ballet commissioned from Ravel by Diaghilev in 1908, with choreography by Fokine. From this aestheticising, classicising work Ravel drew two splendid suites, which have gone on living independently in the concert hall.
