By 1876 Brahms was already famous and established across the musical world without yet having attempted a symphony, a treacherous and feared form, because it meant measuring himself directly against the heights reached by Beethoven. Confronting the «giant» was unavoidable, though. Brahms came to it by degrees: with the Piano Concerto no. 1, with the two Serenades and with the Variations on a Theme by Haydn. When the moment of the First Symphony arrived, the German-speaking world was seized by an interest comparable to a Verdi première in Italy. Expectations were not disappointed. The powerful critic and intellectual Eduard Hanslick, in his triumphant review, compared Brahms to the late Beethoven and placed this first work in direct continuity with the venerated composer. At forty-three, Brahms’s challenge could be said to be won.
