Like Beethoven, Johannes Brahms never set out to write a concerto for cello and orchestra, a genre Schumann attempted amid a thousand technical difficulties. In compensation, in 1887 the Hamburg composer produced a double concerto, which was also his last symphonic creation. In Baroque terms, Brahms seems here to be measuring himself against an updating of the concerto grosso, making the most of the head-on contrasts between soloists and orchestra, opening a most generous vein of lyricism in the Andante and finally allowing himself ample doses of humour in the finale, an apotheosis of the interplay between the two instruments and the orchestral mass.
With their immense forces, Mahler’s symphonies are an unavoidable test for every great orchestra. From his First Symphony onwards the Bohemian composer called for an ensemble of enormous proportions, including — among others — 60 strings, 7 horns, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, a tuba and an impressive array of percussion, to represent, programmatically, «endless spring», «nature waking from its long winter sleep», the «days of youth: flowers, fruit and thorns», and then a grotesque funeral march followed by a stormy Allegro that tells, in a liberating key, the Promethean challenge of conquering Paradise.
