Information

In a life undermined by nervous fragility and mental disorder, Robert Schumann swung always between exaltation and despair, which rapidly consumed his mind and body. His musical writing is therefore always reluctant to be harnessed, and appears as a stream of thought in continual evolution, as though the composer kept going beyond the score, in a longing for the infinite. So it is in the magnificent Concerto for cello and orchestra, a paradigm of the literature for that instrument, destined to open a path through the nineteenth- and twentieth-century tradition; and so it is in the Piano Concerto, which shuns traditional forms and throws itself between passionate impulses and dizzying changes of mood, through a wide range of shadings in which enchanted poetic suspensions can be glimpsed. But Schumann’s way of composing sat badly with the flexibility the theatre demands. That is why his only complete opera remains Genoveva, unjustly absent from today’s programmes. Manfred, on the other hand, is a poem for voices, chorus and orchestra, whose splendid overture can be regarded as an independent symphonic poem, almost Lisztian in its thematic concision and evocative power.
