A visit to the posthumous exhibition of drawings by his friend the architect Viktor Hartmann, who died at 39 in 1873, gave Modest Mussorgsky the idea for a suite of piano pieces of powerful imagination which, between one promenade and the next through the rooms of the exhibition, describes ten pictures behind which lie as many states of mind, through to the triumphal final vision of the Great Gate of Kiev. Ravel, on whom Russian music and Mussorgsky’s in particular always exerted a great attraction, was so won over by the Pictures that he made an orchestral version which became famous not only for its incomparable richness of colour, but downright paradigmatic.
