«So I had sworn, to love him in the right way, so that I would even love his love for another!». So the Marschallin, thinking of the young Octavian who already loves Sophie, sings one of the most poignant farewells in the history of music theatre. It is the epilogue of Der Rosenkavalier, the masterpiece of the Strauss-Hofmannsthal «firm», a great reflection on the transience of time, of things, of affections, with an impalpable mixture of irony and seriousness, of drama and comedy, all set in the Vienna of Maria Theresa but with figures and situations typical of Italian comic opera. The trio of female voices corresponds to the three protagonists of the story: the Marschallin, Octavian (a male character sung by a mezzo-soprano) and Sophie, to whom the heroine «hands over» her love, the very symbol of a golden age now lost, and not only on stage.
