«Composed and dedicated to the University of Prague by Antonín Dvořák for the honorary degree conferred on him». So reads the dedication of the «Carnival» Overture, one of the last works of the Bohemian composer, who is «fixed» among the cultural fathers of his country in the great fresco that dominates one of the foyers of the Smetana Hall in Prague, the capital’s principal auditorium. The occasional piece, dated 1901, is in sonata form, with a vigorous allegro full of impetus, an andantino in G minor with rustic echoes — almost a lyrical intermezzo — and finally a return of the first theme, rhythmically festive, a hallmark of Dvořák’s genuinely national music.
There is an American story of social integration behind Antonín Dvořák’s symphonic masterpiece. In 1892 the Bohemian composer was invited by the patron Jeannette Thurber to direct the National Conservatory of Music in New York, one of the first schools to admit women and African Americans. For this far-sighted woman it was essential that the newly founded institution be led by an eminent European musician. Dvořák hesitated for a long time, until he was persuaded to accept the generous offer of 15,000 dollars a year, on condition that he could return home in the summer months. Under his direction the Conservatory became a model of modernity and merit. Among the students was the future African American composer Harry Burleigh, who introduced Dvořák to the vast repertoire of the spirituals. Bringing together the two popular traditions — the Bohemian and the American — created the conditions for the Symphony no. 9 «From the New World», which had its première at Carnegie Hall in 1893 to enormous success and became a milestone of symphonic music of any age.
