Amedeo Amodio’s approach to Prosper Mérimée’s story takes on metatheatrical shades, theatre within theatre. So, on the ridge between the time of art and the time of life, between characters and people, this particular version of Carmen unfolds, performed here by the Daniele Cipriani Company. To the music of Georges Bizet’s opéra-comique, adapted and enriched with original additions by Giuseppe Calì and played by the Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the story of the cigarette girl of Seville is spun out from backstage. Through unpredictable and surreal juxtapositions, Carmen plays a transgressive, subversive game in order to assert «her own right to inconstancy», as Amodio himself explains. Costumes and sets are signed by Luisa Spinatelli, the choreographer’s accomplice in creating that necessary «empty space» in which to hold the tragedy of a woman devoted to freedom.
