«We Czechs are a singing people», said Bedřich Smetana. That was certainly true of music theatre, but of symphonic music too, as the cycle of six symphonic poems Má vlast (My Country) shows, written between 1874 and 1880 and performed complete for the first time in Prague on 5 November 1882, two years before the composer’s death, by which time he had long been completely deaf. Smetana’s music draws continually on folk motifs but also on figures, images, places and memories, between history and legend, of a land that in the mid-nineteenth century was rediscovering its national identity and that could begin to sing of itself again only in the freedom of the symphonic poem, released from the rigid structures of the symphony. Skilfully built music, easy to listen to and wholly pervaded by imaginative force: hearing it, one seems to see woods, meadows, castles, and above all the great river, the Vltava, described from its springs to golden Prague, where the dances of the ancient Czech peoples echo, transfigured.
