«If he lowers his magic wand where the powers of chorus and orchestra lend him their forces, we may expect to discover still more wonderful landscapes in the secrets of the world of spirits». So Robert Schumann prophetically crowned the talent of the twenty-year-old Johannes Brahms, who did not have time to show his mentor the fruits of his first great instrumental creation, the Piano Concerto no. 1, initially conceived as a symphony and then adapted to concerto form. Schumann is present, though, in the spirit of the piano writing, now passionate, now suddenly melancholy, now impetuous, now playful, watched over by an orchestra whose vigour finds precedents only in Beethoven.
If Ingrid Bergman and Yves Montand made Brahms’s Third Symphony universally famous with the film Goodbye Again — and more particularly its nostalgic, lacerating third movement — Brahms displays in this masterpiece a decidedly atypical symphony, whose movements all end quietly, as though the tensions faded towards silence at the close of some of the most intense developments he ever wrote. The composer was very worried that it would fail; instead, in his own day there were those who christened it the «new Eroica», following the lead of most German critics, who saw in Brahms the natural heir of Beethoven.
