The Jovine family and the microcosm of a Neapolitan basso are fighting for survival between the last fires of Fascism, the Second World War and the euphoria and contradictions of the post-war years. Rota’s music fits the facets of this most bitter comedy like a glove, handling different languages, registers and moods with ease. De Filippo rewrote his own play and showed himself a librettist to all intents and purposes, and Napoli milionaria is a true masterpiece of twentieth-century music theatre, a work written with the mastery of the genuinely great, with a depth of thought and language placed at the service of the stage, of a story that is hopeless and very hard, and yet many-sided, with its smiles, its irony and its tenderness.
