Rapsodia satanica (1917), written and directed by Nino Oxilia and starring Lyda Borelli, is a rare «cinematic poem» of Art Nouveau aesthetics and D’Annunzian overtones, a Faustian myth in the feminine: Countess Alba d’Oltrevita barters her soul to win back her youth, breaks the pact by yielding to love and plunges towards a fate marked by eros and thanatos. Lyda Borelli’s magnetism runs through borellismo: a highly stylised manner of acting, made of symbolist poses and heightened gestures. The absolute diva of early Italian cinema, she is less known today partly because a significant part of her films has been lost. The restoration, carried out by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, gives back the visual power of the film and Mascagni’s score. Played live by the Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the work is restored to its original form, bringing out the dialogue between images and music.
Cavalleria rusticana is among the most performed works of the great Italian repertoire and, in this double bill devoted to Mascagni, will be staged after the film. «It is a journey of love that drives its characters mad and lets us discover the border between reason and the loss of one’s senses, in a fascinating fresco of the human soul», says the director Emma Dante, who came out of experimental theatre and is today one of the most authoritative names in drama and opera internationally: she sets the story in her own Sicily and brings out the contrast between collective ritual and private laceration, drawing out the popular material of the drama. On the podium is Daniel Oren, regarded as one of the most admired conductors of our time and one of the greatest interpreters of the Italian operatic repertoire.
