On stage, almost nothing happens in Il trovatore. Yet each character tells a story, the same story, from a different point of view. There is Ferrando, who tells of a child half burned to death in the revenge of a young gypsy woman, perhaps a witch. There is Azucena, who remembers her mother’s burning, the mission of revenge, the love for her (adopted) son. There is Leonora, who recalls the tournament where she met a mysterious and fascinating troubadour knight. There is Manrico, who describes the duel and the «strange pity» he felt for his rival in love and in politics. It sounds like a complex story to tell, but it is a jigsaw of memories mixing nobles and outcasts, high sentiment, superstition and violence. Between the hunchbacked jester Rigoletto (1851) and the courtesan Violetta (1853/4), in 1853 the gypsy Azucena completes a triptych of Verdian heroes who are «different» and marginal; and that is how she expresses herself musically, in an opera which, as a perpetual act of storytelling, looks back to the forms of bel canto more than its sisters in the popular trilogy.
