On 14 January 1858 Felice Orsini attempted to assassinate Napoleon III. Not the moment to stage a regicide: the Neapolitan censors made that clear to Verdi, who had set his eye — and his pen, with the librettist Antonio Somma — on the death of Gustav III of Sweden at a masked ball. The project moved to Rome, where it opened in 1859, not without compromises: everything crossed the ocean and the king became a count, governor of Boston. What remains untouched is the drama of a man who must reconcile his public image with the private torment of a love returned but impossible, for the wife of his best friend; and her torment, between guilt and the furious grief of a husband twice betrayed. The new setting, for that matter, is no fallback: it creates an ideal context for an opera in which Verdi mixes the brilliant lightness of French taste, the mysterious shadows of the fortune-teller Ulrica and of court conspiracies, nobility of purpose and the fire of passion.
