Information

At the end she bursts in on horseback, saves the love of her life and together they ride away, free and happy. Not a prince charming, though: her name is Minnie, and she snatches the redeemed bandit Dick Johnson from the gallows. She lives alone, runs a bar full of rough miners, keeps their gold safe and cannot afford to be a fragile damsel in distress. To the customers of the saloon she is a friend, a confidante, a mother, a teacher, but she is also a young woman who dreams of true love. It will not be the love she expected, but a wanted man and a frequenter of disreputable women, for whom she will become a heroine — even offering herself, in exchange for his life, as the stake in a game of poker against the sheriff, whom she beats by cheating.

Minnie, not a victim but a redeemer, is one of Puccini’s most fascinating and complex women. In 1910, at the Metropolitan in New York, this no less many-sided and captivating opera had its première; its driving action gives way only to the aria the condemned man dedicates to his beloved. And she will save him.
